SUBJECT: Using WP 5.0 with Microsoft Windows 286 and 386
Microsoft Windows is an extension of the DOS operating system. Windows is a graphical interface for IBM computers. With Windows, a user can operate several different applications at the same time, and switch from one to another without quitting any of them. A user can switch between programs with a couple of keystrokes or the click of a mouse. Since you never have to quit a program, you can continue from where you left off.
Standard DOS applications like WordPerfect, Lotus 123, and DBASE can run with Microsoft Windows. These applications require a Windows PIF file (Program Information File). Microsoft provides many PIF files for popular DOS applications. Windows has a utility that allows users to write PIF files for programs that do not have a PIF file inc Windows has a utilitcations need to run in the full screen mode under Windows, although some can run in a window.
WordPerfect and Microsoft Windows
WordPerfect 5.0 and 4.2 run with Microsoft Windows without any problems. Most reported problems are result from users setting up the WordPerfect PIF file incorrectly. Two sets of instructions on setting up the WordPerfect 5.0 PIF file, one for Windows 286 and one for Windows 386, follow. The WordPerfect 4.2 PIF file is shipped with Windows.
Other problems are from users incorrectly using WordPerfect in Windows. WordPerfect 4.2 and 5.0 must always be run in the exclusive mode. This means that when WordPerfect is active no other program can be running in the background. When WordPerfect is inactive, all of its functions are suspended, such as printing and merging. WordPerfect should be run in Full Screen mode or in an Icon, not in a window. Microsoft suggested that if users report problems they should increase the memory specified in the PIF file by 20K. Microsoft Windows tech support has been very helpful. If
customers need detailed instructions about Windows, refer them to Microsoft support.
